Drinking wine with tuna steak takes gastronomy to a higher dimension. When it comes to pairing fish dishes with wine, white wines are usually the first to come to mind, as the freshness, fruitiness and acidity of white wines harmonise well with the more restrained flavours of fish. Now let’s look at what wine goes with tuna steak!

Wines to match each type of fish

At Borsuttogo, our main goal is to promote quality wine consumption as widely as possible. Part of this is also to explain the place of premium wines in gastronomy, which we have already written about from several angles. This time we will focus on the pairing of fish, including tuna steaks, and wine.

In general, we recommend white wine with certain fish dishes, as it perfectly complements, enhances and not overpowers them. Fresh and fruity batches are ideal to bring out the delicate and restrained flavours of the fish.

White flesh fish include cod, for example, which goes well with a light, acidic white wine. Spicy, more robust fish dishes can also be paired with a wine with more character, possibly sweeter. For example, Riesling is a great counterbalance to the spiciness of fish.

Tuna steak is a fatty fish, like herring and mackerel. Their more intense flavours are well complemented by a fuller-bodied white wine such as Chardonnay.

How to choose wine to go with tuna steak?

The above general rule needs to be nuanced, as a lot depends on the way it is prepared, the sauce served with the tuna steak and the garnish. These can all modify what makes the perfect accompaniment.

The simply prepared seared tuna steak is tender and delicious. The steakier version may be more floury. Serve this simply prepared fish with oak-aged Chardonnay.

A great choice is the Meursault Chardonnay from Madame Veuve Point Winery. This lot is aged for 14 months to achieve its pure and brilliant golden colour and full-bodied, rich aromas. This Chardonnay is a well-balanced, lush and fresh white wine that enhances the flavours of seared tuna steaks.

If you’re making a lemon-herb cream sauce to go with your seared tuna steak, a Sauvignon Blanc is a good pairing with Chardonnay. While rosé wine is a good accompaniment to the crispy-skinned tuna steak.

Smoked tuna steak has a rather intense flavour, which is why it is rarely served on its own. Served with toast and cream cheese, it is an extraordinary experience. All that is needed is the perfect choice of wine, which can be found in the form of a wine with sufficient acidity and excellent flavour, such as a stronger rosé or sparkling wine. These wines harmonise perfectly with the salty and fishy notes.

A real gourmet pairing!

If you want to pair wine with tuna steak, you need to know all the possible ways to pair it. So here is the combination that will give the consumer a feeling of real luxury.

And this pairing is made perfect by a complex Champagne that can offset the fatty texture of the tuna steak, while adding elegance and sophistication to the meal.

Make sure that if you serve champagne or rosé wine with your tuna steak, it is cooled to the optimum temperature before serving.
