Alzinger Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Loibenberg 2018

There are 2 things worth mentioning about Wachau. As well as being a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is also one of Austria’s most charming wine regions: steep vineyards, unique soil and microclimate, all crammed into a footprint of only 15 km. The varied soil conditions and the almost constant circulation of air currents have a significant influence on the development of the aromas in the vines and thus on the aroma and flavour of the wine itself. The cool winds give the wines of Wachau a delicate and elegant flavour, while the warmer currents give them power and fullness.

Wachau is first mentioned in a Carolingian document dating back to 830, but the tradition of viticulture dates back to Roman times, with the first flowering of the vineyards during the Carolingian dynasty. Wine is mentioned in the writings of several ancient Roman poets and writers and was one of the main commercial products and favourite drinks of the Wachau population at the time.

Its wines are still in demand worldwide, and the Alzinger Grüner Veltliner Smaragd Loibenberg, made from the Danube Valley Grüner Veltliner grape variety, is a particular highlight. The “smaragd” designation is a classification of wines from the region, which distinguishes 3 classes based on the maturity of the grapes and the alcohol content of the wine, and classifies Loibenberg Smaragd in the category above 12.5%. These are the best and most valuable Grüner Veltliners. The categories below this are Steinfeder (alcohol content max. 11.5%), which is the lightest fruity wine in Wachau, and Federspiel, which is a shade more powerful (alcohol content ranges from 11.5% to 12.5%). This three-tier wine classification system was created by the Vinea Wachau association, founded in 1983, to protect the quality of wines, which is unique to this region.

The amazing complexity, flavour and aromas of its wines have helped the Alzinger Winery to win the title of Best Winery in Wachau. Most recently at the Wine Spectator’s Grüner Veltliner tasting, Alzinger was the winner, with 4 out of the top 5 wines taking first place!

Alzinger Grüner Veltliner Loibenberg’s Emerald of Loibenberg is a pale gold dry white wine. White flowers, apricot, subtle spiciness on the nose, intense peach aromas and dominant spiciness on the palate, with notes of salt, white pepper, smoky tobacco. Fresh and lush, lively acidity, slightly creamy texture, nice balance, long mineral – spicy finish. Really elegant.

Recommended with poultry and pork dishes and cured meats, but also with lighter dishes such as lean fish and vegetarian dishes.
