MEURSAULT CHARDONNAY

MADAME VEUVE POINT

The founder of Madame Veuve Point in France is the famous Jeane-Marie Point, known only as the “Lady Vine Grower”. She was born on 7 February 1877. She spent her childhood in Vergisson in her parents’ winery, where she learned the trade at an early age. She married M. Claude Point on 23 November 1895 in Solutré, in the heart of the Burgundy vineyards. Claude died soon after in 1903 and Jeanne-Marie was widowed at the age of 26. Wanting to keep her vineyards, she bent down to the task and became a woman winemaker, working harder and harder than a man, and devoted herself entirely to the vines and her son. But the winemakers in the village refused to accept her. She had to do even better to prove herself. A hard-working and cheerful woman, she finally achieved her goal and her wines became known all over the world.

Meursault is a large village in the Côte de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy. Its wines are held in the same esteem as its neighbour to the south, Puligny-Montrachet. The vineyard of Meursault occupies the southern part of the Côte de Beaune, gently sloping over hillsides at 230-360 metres. This long field town is dotted with small vineyard houses, interspersed with huge middle-class mansions. The excellent vineyards and vineyards here were planted in 1098 by the monks of the Cistercian abbey of Citeaux, the first Cistercian monastery in the world.

The grapes are hand-harvested and the whole bunches are pressed directly in a pneumatic press, and the wine is then clarified in stainless steel tanks. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation are carried out without the addition of yeast. Finally, the wine is matured in oak barrels for 14 months.

The Meursault wine region is the gateway to the terroir of the finest white wines, with Côte de Beaune at its heart. The Meursault Chardonnay is characterised by roundness, richness and minerality. It is pure and brilliant gold in colour with a fine silvery sheen. On the nose and palate, it is a varied cavalcade of almonds, toasted hazelnuts, butter and honey, as well as white flowers (hawthorn, elderflower, fern, linden and verbena) and minerals (flint). A full-bodied, richly aromatic, balanced, fresh and fresh white wine.

Recommended with poultry dishes. It pairs well with crustaceans, lobster and prawns, swordfish and asparagus, but it is also a great accompaniment to blue cheese and foie gras.
