Today, it is impossible to talk about Sauvignon Blanc without mentioning New Zealand. This wine grape variety is now a world leader in its quality, thanks to New Zealand’s natural and technological resources.

Founded in 1985 by fifth-generation vintner Robert Hill-Smith, Nautilus Estate is a small, family-owned winery with all its grapes sourced from a handful of vineyards in the strikingly beautiful Awatere Valley in Marlborough, on New Zealand’s South Island. It is one of the few wineries in the area to have remained under the same ownership for more than 3 decades. This time and consistency has contributed to an excellent knowledge and understanding of the terroir’s potential.

For the past thirty years, they have been looking for special vineyards that give distinctive and exciting flavours, from the alluvial floodplains of the River Wairau to the later plantings that run up the hills of the Southern Valley. The differences in altitude, exposure and topography combined with the different soils result in unique growing conditions and thus unique wines.

The team combines state-of-the-art facilities with traditional winemaking, with the sole aim of reflecting and preserving the flavours and aromas in the grapes and the harmony of all these. “We only make changes if we are really convinced that it will enhance the quality of our activity.” – said Robert Hill-Smith.

Winemaker – and current Managing Director – Clive Jones joined Nautilus in 1998. In 2006 he designed the White Wine Cellar, responsible for the production of Marlborough’s flagship Sauvignon Blanc. This commitment has been rewarded with numerous awards and trophies.

The Nautilus shell on Nautilus Estate wine bottles is a perfect mathematical spiral; beautiful, natural, almost ethereal. It is a shape found throughout nature: in the growth of sunflower seeds, in the movement of the cyclone’s air, or in the spiral through which a hawk flies towards its prey. It is this balance, harmony and natural beauty that has inspired the creation of expressive, textured and finely crafted wines.

The 2023 Nautilus Sauvignon Blanc is a brilliant pale green in colour, and its sweetness is evident in its intense nose. The aromas of passion fruit, citrus and apple are complemented by spring meadow flowers and honeydew melon. When tasted, it shows a delicious intensity, with notes of green apple, lemongrass and juicy passion fruit blended with the classic minerality of the Awatere Valley. Its lively acidity offers a long, firm texture with a crisp finish and subtle fruitiness.

Recommended for fish, seafood, vegetarian dishes and fresh summer salads.
