Salento

The wines of Salento are very popular: the sun is always shining in this region, which is conducive to quality viticulture. Salento is located in the province of Puglia, in the south of Italy – in the heel of the boot. It has high temperatures, but the proximity of the sea helps. There are many wineries here, as the area was famous for viticulture even in the days of the ancient Romans.

Two typical grape varieties are grown in Salento: Primitivo and Negroamaro – both of which make excellent red wines. Discover the unique world of Italian wines and choose Puglian drinks to accompany your Mediterranean cuisine.

What do you need to know about Salento?

Salento is an Italian region in the province of Puglia. There have been vineyards here since ancient times, so there is a long tradition of wine making in the area.

Salento is located in the ‘boot heel’ of Italy – bordered by the Adriatic Sea to the west and the Ionian Sea to the south. It is also a famous tourist destination, not only for its wineries.

Famous towns such as Lecce, also known as the Florence of the South, are located here. Not far away, on the Ionian coast, is Gallipoli, which means “beautiful town” in Greek. Santa Maria di Leuca is famous for being the southernmost part of the boot’s heel, where the two seas meet.

Geographically, the Salento region also includes the town of Manduria, which also produces excellent wines – you can find them in ourPuglia wine shop.

Salento and Italian wines

The number of hours of sunshine in this area can make growing grapes a little difficult – but the locals are good at solving the problems. In general, the varieties grown here are well adapted to the Mediterranean environment.

The most popular grape varieties in the area are red Negroamaro, Primitivo, Susumaniello and Malvasia Nera, and white Verdeca and Fiano. All of these varieties make delicious wines: you can pick up a bottle of each from our shop.

Salento wines are typically full-bodied, with plenty of sunshine, and rich in fruity flavours. They are excellent with Mediterranean dishes, mature cheeses, pizzas and pasta.

What wines from the Salento region are on offer?

It’s worth having a good look around the webshop, and even search for wines from the Puglia region to find an even wider selection – we’ve also put Manduria wines in a separate category for clarity.

Among the wines from Salento, we must mention in particular the 12 e Mezzo Primitivo 2022, made from early harvested primitivo grapes. It is an elegant dry red wine with flavours of plum and cherry.

The 12 e mezzo Negroamaro 2022 is also an outstanding red wine, based on the Negroamaro grape: so called because of its dark colour.

White wine lovers should try the wine made from the Malvasia Biancara grape variety, produced by the Varvaglione Winery.

Our staff will be happy to help you find the perfect drink, whether it’s for a celebration or a casual evening with a fine Italian wine.
