Special festive food and drinks for Christmas dinner
Before Christmas, we spend a lot of time planning special festive dishes to make the festive season more special. But we can’t forget the drinks to go with them. To make the run-up to Christmas easier, we’ve got some ideas for festive dinners and wines to accompany them.
Tradition or innovation?
While some families have a habit of always putting traditional dishes on the festive table, others do the opposite: every year they try new recipes to create a truly special festive menu. Whichever is right for you and your family, at Borsuttogo you’ll find the perfect wine to match every dish. Now we’re here to help you choose.
Although we’re here to talk about speciality foods, we don’t want to leave those of you who are more traditional without any tips. So here’s a quick recommendation alongside the traditional festive dishes.
Traditional festive dishes and matching wines
Chowder is often an indispensable part of the festive table. However, it is not easy to choose a wine to accompany it: soups, which are not usually accompanied by wine, fish dishes, which are usually accompanied by white wine, and also paprika dishes, which are more suited to red wines. How can this contradiction be resolved? For example, with Borsuttogó’s Villányi Cuvée, in which cabernet franc, merlot and syrah are in perfect harmony, and into this harmony they blend the fish juice.
Stuffed cabbage is another typical dish on Christmas menus. It’s much easier to serve here, as it can be made elegant with a Riesling. Perhaps the most popular of the desserts is the bejgli, which is the perfect accompaniment to the 6-puttonyos Tokaji Aszú.
Special festive dishes with wine
A really special holiday treat is the foie gras stuffed with foie gras and served with lentil salad. In addition to foie gras, this festive main course also includes toadstools and goose breast, which create a delicious combination. And to enhance this harmony, we can choose a full-bodied red wine with a taste reminiscent of berries, such as the Merlot 2020 DOC Collio from Varvaglione Winery.
If you don’t like liver or you insist on fish dishes, salmon pasta with spinach is a simple yet special dish. Both the light, vegetable pasta dish and the fish should be paired with a fresh, fragrant and elegant white wine, so it’s easy to choose Marfi-Sauvignon Blanc Verdeca Puglia.
Also easy to prepare, yet with an extraordinary taste experience, is the grilled sparrow with Parmesan. The fragrant wild mushrooms pair well with an elegantly aromatic and more restrained red wine like Lar de Paula Limitada Reserva 2014, which pairs well with grilled vegetables and spicy cheeses.
And don’t forget the bubbles!
Champagnes are also an indispensable accompaniment to festive occasions and special festive dishes, and can be enjoyed as an aperitif. We also prefer to toast with champagne at toasts and it is usually part of the magic of the occasion. With a range of premium champagnes and cavas to choose from, you’re guaranteed to find the one that suits you best.
