They are a great choice for dinner, a night out or even for events! And if you give it as a gift, you certainly can’t go wrong.
What do we offer when it comes to Italian red wine?
At Borsuttogo, we only sell wines that are made by authentic producers, using traditional winemaking methods and excellent ingredients. Appassimento Paralupi Puglia 2021, for example, is a true southern Italian speciality, which owes its full, rich character to the sun-ripened Primitivo grape. During the Appassimento process, the grapes are partially dried, making the wine more concentrated and silky. This Italian red wine perfectly reflects the sunny, Mediterranean atmosphere of Puglia.
Also worthy of mention is Papale Primitivo di Manduria, also from Puglia, which perfectly combines rich fruitiness with a velvety texture. This red wine is an excellent choice for a festive dinner.
The history and diversity of Italian red wine
Italian red wine production dates back more than 2000 years. Italy’s wine regions – such as Tuscany, Piedmont, Veneto, Puglia and Sicily – all have their own styles, grape varieties, microclimates and winemaking traditions.
In Tuscany, the Sangiovese grape is the dominant grape, from which the world-famous Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino are made. These red wines are typically high in acidity and medium in tannin, making them an excellent match for Italian cuisine, especially tomato-based dishes.
Wines from the southern Italian regions, such as Puglia and Sicily, tend to be warmer in character, with softer acidity and more mature, fruity aromas. For example, the aforementioned Appassimento is a super example of how Italian red wine can be not only classically full-bodied, but also velvety and refined!
How is Italian red wine made?
The winemaking process largely determines the character of the final product. Quality Italian wine is based on hand-harvested, healthy grapes. This is followed by fermentation and then ageing for varying lengths of time at the winemaker’s discretion – whether in stainless steel tanks, oak barrels or bottles.
Longer ageing results in deeper, more complex flavours, while fresher batches – such as a younger Rosso – are more fruit-forward. The balance of tannins, acidity and alcohol is very important to the enjoyment value, and the experience of generations of Italian winemakers is unrivalled.
