Historical facts about Tokaj
According to written records, Tokaj was already growing grapes in the 12th century, and King Béla IV first mentions the Tokaj wine region in 1252. Italian and Turkish influences were also present, and by the 1550s Tokaj wine was already making inroads on international markets.

The Rákóczi era saw a major boom in the region, with the construction of numerous cellars and castles and the legal regulation of aszú production. The development of the protection of origin and the demarcation of the wine region also played a major role in the life of the region, and Tokaj was the first wine region in the world to be demarcated, with a length of 87 kilometres and a width of 3-4 kilometres.

Unfortunately, the phylloxera epidemic of the 19th century did not spare the Tokaj wine region, with 90% of the vineyards destroyed. In 2002, UNESCO declared the region, which borders 28 municipalities, a World Heritage Site. It is forbidden to bring grapes, must or wine from other areas, so

to protect the Tokaj wine specialities.
How to choose Tokaj wine!
It’s good to know that only white grape varieties are allowed in this wine region: furmint, lime, kabar, zeta, yellow muscatel and fat grape. Most people think of Tokaji aszú when they hear the name of the wine region, but there are several types of wine available, as is the case with Villány wines. In addition to aszú, sweet and dry Samorodni, Tokaji translation, Tokaji máslás, late-harvest wines, dry Tokaji wines and sparkling wines are also typical of the region.

So if you are looking to buy Tokaj wine, make sure you pay attention to the type of wine you are looking for.

The aszú is one of the most famous of the Tokaj wines, and it is also one of the most special. The aszú grapes are sorted one by one, collected in vats and stomped to a pulp. Then the must is added and left to macerate for a few days, and after filtering, the wine is fermented and matured. The term ‘puttony’ refers to the sweetness level; in the old days, the number of puttony was calculated by adding how many puttony (about 25 kg) of aszú grains to a 136-litre barrel. According to this, there are 5 and 6-puttonyos Tokaj aszú, and in our range you will find 6-puttonyos aszú, which is a real experience of a lifetime.
