The lesser known Italian dark-skinned negroamaro grape produces ruby red wines that are complex in flavour and light enough to be light, while their fruity flavours are captivating. Negroamaro is a grape variety native to southern Italy, grown exclusively in the Puglia region, in the areas comprising the ‘heel’ of Italy.
The compound word negroamaro derives from the Italian word for black, while the second member, amaro, means bitter, referring to the grape’s characteristic nuance and acidity. If you would like to taste our excellent negroamaro wines, take a look at our products.

The history of negroamaro
Italy’s wine culture may at first seem complex and confusing, with a multitude of regions, vineyards and vineyards. Interestingly, more than a hundred grape varieties are used regularly and several hundred on a limited basis, occasionally added to blends to improve structure, acidity or alcohol content. So learning the secrets of Italian winemaking is a long-term pursuit.
And there are times when not much is said about a particular speciality, and negroamaro falls into this category. This red grape variety has a long history in southern Italy, and local wine producers believe it was introduced by the Greeks during their conquest of the region in the 8th century BC.
The grape determines the quality of the wine
The body and flavour of a wine depends on the grape from which it is made, that much is clear. In our negroamaro range on our webshop, we offer the excellences of the Puglia region, but to understand the greatness of this wine, it is worth looking at the grapes from which it is made.
Puglia’s hot Mediterranean climate produces wines that balance relatively high alcohol levels with freshness and balance. Winemakers love the Negroamaro grape’s ability to grow well even in years of drought and its resistance to disease.
It yields high, so pruning must be judicious, and it likes chalky soil. It can withstand stormy summers as well as long periods of drought.
Flavours and food
Of course, the taste of these wines and the food they go well with are also very important. The flavours are earthy and dominated by dark fruit aromas such as prunes, ripe plums, blackberries and cherries, but also with a faint hint of thyme, allspice and cloves.
Dry but full-bodied, it is a great counterpoint to the bold and characterful flavours. It can be recommended with grilled meats, goat and mutton, for example, but it also pairs well with cured hams and cheeses.
When browsing the negroamaro range in our webshop, it is worth browsing through the product descriptions, where you will find specific recommendations and more detailed descriptions of each wine.
