What does the term dry red wine mean?

It is a well-known fact that red wines are made from blue grape varieties, which can show extraordinary diversity. We consider it important to illustrate this diversity with our red wine range, while at the same time selecting only high quality lots. We don’t have an endless selection of products, but we do offer a wide variety of wines from all over the world.

This is no different for dry red wines, which are named because the sugars naturally present in the grapes are almost entirely converted to alcohol during fermentation, so the wine has no sweet flavour. Because of their minimal sugar content, their flavour is based on fruitiness, tannin and spicy notes.

Their more intense texture typically offers richer aromas than sweeter wines. Their quality comes from a harmony of acidity, tannins and alcohol through a complex and deep flavour experience.

A Pinot Noir from Burgundy

The Mercurey Rouge Pinot Noir from Madame Veuve Point Winery is an excellent example of what a flawless dry red wine looks like. The history of the winery is as interesting as the excellence of its individual lots.

After her widow, Jeanne Marie Point continued the work her husband had started: she became a vine grower and winemaker. Of course, in the second half of the 1800s, this was a rather odd occurrence, and soon everyone referred to her as the ‘Grape Grower’s Lady’. The profession didn’t really take to her because she was a woman. Madame Veuve Point did win the respect of the winemakers by competing in international competitions, which brought her success and worldwide fame.

Today, his great-granddaughter Géraldine is at the helm of the winery, continuing the tradition started by her great-grandmother. One of the results is Mercurey Rouge. The journey of this Pinot Noir begins on the favourable climatic hillsides of Mercurey, to eventually show its beautiful ruby colour in the most varied places in the world. The palate is fresh, pleasant and velvety tannic. Elegant and bold, it is a perfect example of the Madame Veuve Point tradition.

Choosing the right dry red wine

The choice of dry red wines depends on several factors. The occasion or the food you want to drink it with is important, as is your personal taste.

Wines rich in tannins, such as a Cabernet Sauvignon, go very well with red meats. While a softer wine like a Merlot will complement duck or pasta dishes. When pairing different dishes and wines, always consider both the character of the food and the wine.

The occasion can also influence the choice of dry red wine. For an elegant dinner or a special occasion, a mature Syrah can be a sophisticated choice. And for a more casual gathering, a quality Pinot Noir can enliven the occasion.
