Argentinian Malbec – fruity, full-bodied and versatile choice

Argentin Malbec – gyümölcsös, testes és sokoldalú választás

Argentinian Malbec is a full-bodied red wine known for its rich, dark, fruity flavours and smoky finish. Choosing this with dinner can make you feel like a cool wine enthusiast who has gone off the beaten track.

Fruity and acidic notes

While Malbec is a popular wine worldwide, it is not nearly as popular or well-known as Merlot or Pinot Noir – but that doesn’t stop us from loving it. Known for its deep purple colour and spicy, succulent flavours, Malbec is the perfect choice for those who like strong, full-bodied wines with a strong flavour.

Of course, we also have Argentine Malbec in our range of red wines, so it’s worth taking a look at this special variety. This wine offers a beautiful balance of fruitiness and acidity, with a fruity flavour profile often including notes of blackberry, plum, black cherry and raspberry, while the acidity is often provided by flavours of cocoa, coffee and molasses.

The history of Argentine Malbec

Not many people know it, but Malbec originated in France, where in the Sud-Ouest, this thick-skinned grape is the result of a natural cross between two special varieties from Montpellier and Gaillac. Today, most of the French malbec vineyards are located in Cahors.

Malbec has quickly become one of the top five wine grapes in Bordeaux, but it has never made it to the top French varieties, as its weather and pest resistance leaves something to be desired. However, it found a new home in Argentina, in Mendoza to be precise, where a French botanist planted it in 1868.

Today, Argentina leads the way, with more than 75 percent of the Malbec vineyards, and in a sense, the country has elevated Malbec to the status of the best noble grape. Interestingly, malbec has difficulty producing the acidity needed to achieve great flavour and a long finish. In high altitude areas, where there is a large variation in daytime temperatures, the grapes become more acidic.

A SOPHENIA Synthesis Malbec

When exploring the Malbec range in our webshop, it is worth looking at the individual wine profiles for a more detailed picture. SOPHENIA Synthesis Malbec wine, for example, is an excellent choice for roast lamb or beef. As a practical tip, it is also recommended to drink the wine at a temperature of between 14 and 16 degrees.

The malbec grape is characterised by its ability to adapt to its environment. In France, for example, the wine is lighter in body and colour, with a more acidic and tart fruit flavour. In Argentina, on the other hand, the flavours are fuller-bodied, more mature and have soft tannins.

In Argentina, Mendoza, Salta and San Juan are the main malbec producing areas, but it is also grown in France and is now grown in California, Chile, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

Hungarian aspect

Malbec is one of the most popular red wines in the United States, and it even has a World Red Wine Day: 17 April. Malbec is believed to be named after a Hungarian farmer called Malbeck, who spread the grape throughout France.

Like many other red wines, Malbec is perfect with red meats, but unlike Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, for example, it doesn’t have a long finish, so it’s also great with fatty meats. If you’re looking for a meat-free accompaniment to malbec, try blue cheese.

Whether it’s Argentinian Malbec or other red wines, we offer our customers high quality products in our online shop.
