Pinot noir red wine is made from the grape of the same name, which is believed to be the source of all serious Burgundy red wines. The word pinot does not only refer to this grape variety, but to a whole family, such as pinot blanc, pinot meunier or pinot gris, also known as pinot gris in our country.
Pinot noir – the grape
To make great pinot noir red wines like the ones we have collected in our range, you need to understand the grape. It is a rather sensitive grape variety and does not thrive in all climates that are suitable for growing grapes.
The best wines are made from grapes grown in cooler regions, but you can also get fine, fruit-rich wines from more temperate regions. Very hot climates, however, are not at all well tolerated by this grape, so it can only produce poorer wines in such areas.
This grape variety produces a very diverse wine, mainly due to its growing conditions. As we have seen, each area produces a different result, so the variations in the wine made from this grape are almost infinite.
This palette is further enriched by the fact that pinot noir is a very old grape variety, which easily produces clones, so there are many varieties of the variety itself. The low yielding pinot noir is particularly sensitive to frost and, because it buds early, can be relatively damaged by spring frosts.
All of these factors have led to the fact that pinot noir is more the domain of wineries producing premium wines, and is not really present in mass production.
Pinot noir red wine is a sophisticated choice
It is difficult to speak in general terms about this wine variety, since, as we have seen, it is grown in many different regions and will produce different results in each one. Still, it is generally relatively low in tannins and is one of the lighter shades of red wine.
An excellent example of Burgundy pinot noir red wines is the BourgognePinot Noir from Madame Veuve Point Winery. Burgundy is home to 25,000 hectares of vineyards and, although significant in size, is a mysterious region in the wine world. But the fact is that pinot noir is the most dominant grape variety of this wine region.
The Madame Veuve Point Winery stands out among the many great wineries in the area – by virtue of its history alone. It was founded in the 1800s by Jeanne Marie Point, who, after becoming a widow, continued the viticulture and winemaking her husband had begun earlier. The professionals refused to accept her, to which Jeanne Marie gave an elegant response: her wine won international recognition.
Today, the winery is run by his great-granddaughter Géraldine, who has carried on the spirit that produces Bourgogne Pinot Noir and premium wines like it.
Burgundy
Burgundy is a wine region in France, near the city of Dijon. In French, it is called Bourgogne. This area has a long tradition of wine making, having produced the drink centuries ago.
The region has a cool, temperate climate, which is favourable for pinot noir red wine. This is why it has become the most dominant grape variety in the area, alongside chardonnay.
